What happened on 5 November

Prices fell below zero in 5 markets on 5 November: South Australia for 9 h 55 minD, Queensland for 8 h 55 minD, Victoria for 6 h 45 minD, New South Wales for 3 h 35 minD and Tasmania for 20 minD. The longest unbroken run was in Victoria, 4 h 20 minD from 11:05–15:25 AEDT; the lowest price there during the day was −A$53.65D/MWh. The run sat inside local daytime hours, when rooftop and utility solar in the NEM is producing. This site does not publish a generation mix for the NEM regions, so the solar and wind share in those intervals is not shown. Denmark DK2 spiked to DKK 2,741/MWhD (about 412D USD/MWh) in the hour from 16:00 CET, above our fixed threshold of 300 USD/MWh.

Of the grids where we meter the generation mix, Denmark ran on the highest renewable share, 36.8D % over the day, with wind at 17.6D % and solar at 19.1D %. Great Britain followed at 36.6D % renewable with wind 25.6D % (transmission-metered; solar on local networks is not in this data). Taiwan followed at 11.4D % renewable with wind 2.9D % and solar 7.1D %. The 7D markets with complete demand data used 2,134,626D MWh between them, led by Great Britain with 38.2D %.

Time below zero across all markets added up to 29 h 30 minD, more than the 26 h 25 minD on 4 November. The biggest day-on-day moves in electricity used were Queensland at +4.8D % and Victoria at −8.6D %. Denmark's renewable share rose by 3.8D points, from 33.0D %. The cheapest hour anywhere cost about −132D USD/MWh, against −110D on 4 November.

How to read this. The 5 November recap covers 15D markets (7D with a full day of demand) and was frozen at 00:30 UTC on 6 November; later operator revisions are not applied. A D badge marks a number we calculated from the operators' metered data, an M badge one published as is. Durations add up priced intervals below zero, clock times are each market's local time, and shares are energy-weighted over the day. Definitions and limits are in the methodology.

ⓘ How this recap is made

Built once after the UTC day ended, then frozen. Electricity used is the metered demand of each market added up over the day (Great Britain: transmission generation); only markets with at least 95 % metered coverage of the day are added up. Hours are UTC hours priced as the mean of the source periods. Below zero is the sum of priced intervals under zero. Nothing is estimated or filled in.
