About this market

Victoria is the VIC1 region of the National Electricity Market. The page reports AEMO’s five-minute regional price and the regional demand figure for the state. Victoria sits in the middle of the southern grid, with links north to New South Wales, west to South Australia and across Bass Strait to Tasmania, so it often acts as a conduit that passes cheap or scarce power from one neighbour to another.

Its identity in the market is set by its links. AEMO gives the Heywood interconnector a nominal design limit of up to 650 MW in either direction, and describes Murraylink as a 220 MW DC cable. When those cables, or the Basslink cable to Tasmania, are full or limited, Victorian prices can separate from those of its neighbours, which makes the regional price a useful signal of where transfer limits bind.

Wind and rooftop solar add variability. A cold, still evening with a unit out can lift prices sharply; a windy spring day can push them below zero.

NEM time is AEST, ten hours ahead of UTC, while Victoria’s local clocks run an hour ahead of that whenever daylight saving applies, so local time and market time differ for part of the year. Prices are five-minute dispatch prices in Australian dollars. We do not show a generation mix for Victoria.
