What happened on 3 November

Prices fell below zero in 4 markets on 3 November: South Australia for 9 h 35 minD, Victoria for 4 h 05 minD, Tasmania for 2 h 30 minD and Queensland for 2 h 25 minD. The longest unbroken run was in South Australia, 7 h 15 minD from 10:30–17:45 ACDT; the lowest price there during the day was −A$57.00D/MWh. All of it fell in local daytime, the hours when solar output in the NEM is available. This site does not publish a generation mix for the NEM regions, so the solar and wind share in those intervals is not shown. Denmark DK2 spiked to DKK 2,445/MWhD (about 366D USD/MWh) in the hour from 17:00 CET, above our fixed threshold of 300 USD/MWh.

The highest renewable share among the metered grids was in Denmark: 48.2D % across the day, with wind at 36.8D % and solar at 11.4D %. Great Britain followed at 38.0D % renewable with wind 26.3D % (transmission-metered; solar on local networks is not in this data). Taiwan followed at 17.3D % renewable with wind 9.4D % and solar 6.9D %. Across the 8D markets with a full day of metered demand, 2,087,625D MWh was used, Great Britain the largest at 36.4D % of it.

Time below zero across all markets added up to 18 h 35 minD, more than the 9 h 15 minD on 2 November. Tasmania and Victoria went below zero after staying positive the day before. The biggest day-on-day moves in electricity used were Denmark at +2.3D % and Victoria at −11.6D %. Great Britain's renewable share fell by 5.4D points, from 43.4D %. The cheapest hour anywhere cost about −30D USD/MWh, against −15D on 2 November.

How to read this. The 3 November recap covers 15D markets (8D with a full day of demand) and was frozen at 00:30 UTC on 4 November; later operator revisions are not applied. A D badge marks a number we calculated from the operators' metered data, an M badge one published as is. Durations add up priced intervals below zero, clock times are each market's local time, and shares are energy-weighted over the day. Definitions and limits are in the methodology.

ⓘ How this recap is made

Built once after the UTC day ended, then frozen. Electricity used is the metered demand of each market added up over the day (Great Britain: transmission generation); only markets with at least 95 % metered coverage of the day are added up. Hours are UTC hours priced as the mean of the source periods. Below zero is the sum of priced intervals under zero. Nothing is estimated or filled in.
