What happened on 31 October
3 markets spent time below zero on 31 October: Victoria for 7 h 50 minD, South Australia for 7 h 45 minD and Tasmania for 6 h 50 minD. The longest unbroken run was in South Australia, 3 h 05 minD from 15:25–18:30 ACDT; the lowest price there during the day was −A$403D/MWh. The run spanned both daytime and evening hours local time. This site does not publish a generation mix for the NEM regions, so the solar and wind share in those intervals is not shown. Great Britain spiked to £258/MWhD (about 345D USD/MWh) in the hour from 18:00 GMT, above our fixed threshold of 300 USD/MWh.
Of the grids where we meter the generation mix, Denmark ran on the highest renewable share, 28.0D % over the day, with wind at 16.5D % and solar at 11.6D %. Great Britain followed at 26.8D % renewable with wind 10.8D % (transmission-metered; solar on local networks is not in this data). Taiwan followed at 14.8D % renewable with wind 4.9D % and solar 8.2D %. Across the 8D markets with a full day of metered demand, 1,814,576D MWh was used, Taiwan the largest at 36.7D % of it.
Time below zero across all markets added up to 22 h 25 minD, less than the 24 h 20 minD on 30 October. New South Wales and Queensland stayed above zero this time. Electricity used rose most in New South Wales (+4.0D %) and fell most in South Australia (−26.4D %). Denmark's renewable share fell by 10.9D points, from 38.9D %. Great Britain's renewable share fell by 6.6D points, from 33.4D %. Taiwan's renewable share fell by 2.1D points, from 16.9D %. The cheapest hour anywhere cost about −195D USD/MWh, against −47D on 30 October.
How to read this. The 31 October recap covers 15D markets (8D with a full day of demand) and was frozen at 00:30 UTC on 1 November; later operator revisions are not applied. A D badge marks a number we calculated from the operators' metered data, an M badge one published as is. Durations add up priced intervals below zero, clock times are each market's local time, and shares are energy-weighted over the day. Definitions and limits are in the methodology.
ⓘ How this recap is made
Built once after the UTC day ended, then frozen. Electricity used is the metered demand of each market added up over the day (Great Britain: transmission generation); only markets with at least 95 % metered coverage of the day are added up. Hours are UTC hours priced as the mean of the source periods. Below zero is the sum of priced intervals under zero. Nothing is estimated or filled in.
