What happened on 30 October
Prices fell below zero in 5 markets on 30 October: South Australia for 9 h 15 minD, Victoria for 8 h 10 minD, Tasmania for 6 h 45 minD, New South Wales for 5 minD and Queensland for 5 minD. The longest unbroken run was in South Australia, 3 h 00 minD from 13:40–16:40 ACDT; the lowest price there during the day was −A$119D/MWh. The run sat inside local daytime hours, when rooftop and utility solar in the NEM is producing. This site does not publish a generation mix for the NEM regions, so the solar and wind share in those intervals is not shown. Denmark DK1 spiked to DKK 2,590/MWhD (about 387D USD/MWh) in the hour from 17:00 CET, above our fixed threshold of 300 USD/MWh.
Denmark had the cleanest mix of the grids we meter, 38.9D % renewable over the day, with wind at 29.1D % and solar at 9.8D %. Great Britain followed at 33.4D % renewable with wind 19.9D % (transmission-metered; solar on local networks is not in this data). Taiwan followed at 16.9D % renewable with wind 7.6D % and solar 7.7D %. 1,992,477D MWh was used across the 8D fully metered markets; Taiwan alone took 36.1D %.
Time below zero across all markets added up to 24 h 20 minD, more than the 19 h 15 minD on 29 October. New South Wales went below zero after staying positive the day before. Against 29 October, demand moved most in Queensland (+0.2D %) and Victoria (−7.9D %). Denmark's renewable share fell by 10.6D points, from 49.5D %. Great Britain's renewable share rose by 7.8D points, from 25.6D %. Taiwan's renewable share rose by 2.8D points, from 14.1D %. The cheapest hour anywhere cost about −47D USD/MWh, against −95D on 29 October.
How to read this. The 30 October recap covers 15D markets (8D with a full day of demand) and was frozen at 00:30 UTC on 31 October; later operator revisions are not applied. A D badge marks a number we calculated from the operators' metered data, an M badge one published as is. Durations add up priced intervals below zero, clock times are each market's local time, and shares are energy-weighted over the day. Definitions and limits are in the methodology.
ⓘ How this recap is made
Built once after the UTC day ended, then frozen. Electricity used is the metered demand of each market added up over the day (Great Britain: transmission generation); only markets with at least 95 % metered coverage of the day are added up. Hours are UTC hours priced as the mean of the source periods. Below zero is the sum of priced intervals under zero. Nothing is estimated or filled in.
