The 2025-26 season is final: EIA’s weekly survey runs October through March and resumes in October 2026. This page refreshes every Wednesday afternoon (Eastern) once the new season’s data is published.
Heating oil and propane are the two heating fuels priced by a dealer rather than a tariff, so they are the ones that move week to week. EIA’s State Heating Oil and Propane Program is the only public source that reports them weekly at state level, and this page carries every series it publishes — nothing modeled, nothing filled in for states it does not survey.

Maine is the state where heating oil matters most on this site, so its weekly series gets its own table. Residential No. 2 heating oil in Maine ran from $3.278/gal in the first October week to $5.371 in the final March week of the 2025-26 season — average $3.726, low $3.235, high $5.407 — against a US average of $4.011. The Maine heating cost page puts it on the same per-MMBtu basis as propane, gas and a heat pump.

How to read the season
Two things stand out in the 2025-26 numbers. Heating oil rose +56% nationally from the first survey week to the last, finishing at $5.535, with the season high of $5.566; that is the crude-price story EIA’s September outlook carries into the coming winter at a national $5.300 forecast. Propane moved only +11% over the same weeks, and its state spread — $1.642 to $4.706 on the final reading — is about geography and delivery cost rather than the commodity.

Frequently asked questions
When does EIA publish these prices?
The State Heating Oil and Propane Program surveys residential prices weekly from October through March and posts them on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. Eastern (a day later after federal holidays). Outside the heating season there are no new readings, which is why this page shows the 2025-26 season as final until October 2026.
Why is my state missing?
SHOPP covers the states where heating oil and propane are a meaningful residential fuel — 21 states for heating oil (Northeast and parts of the Midwest) and 38 for propane. A state not in the table has no EIA weekly series; the PADD regional rows are the closest published figure, and the state pages label them as regional when they are used.
Are these the prices I will pay?
They are statewide averages of dealer prices for residential delivery, not your dealer’s quote. Contract, pre-buy and budget-plan prices differ, and a cold snap moves delivered fuels within a week. Use them to see direction and to compare states, and put your own quote into the calculators.
How we calculated this
No conversion: every figure is the EIA SHOPP weekly residential price in dollars per gallon as published. Season average = mean of the weekly prices EIA published between October 1 and March 31; change = final week − first week. Trend lines plot the same weekly values.
