Why this number
A portable air conditioner rated at 1,200 watts, run 7.6 hours a day, costs about $1.55 a day — about $46.51 a month, or $233 a year — at the US average electricity rate of 17¢/kWh. That places it 10th of the 40 appliances tracked here — in the top quarter, well above the typical household load, so how much you run it genuinely shows on the bill.
What actually drives this number
A single-hose portable air conditioner blows conditioned room air out of the window duct, and every cubic foot it expels is replaced by hot outside air pulled in through every gap in the building. You are cooling the room and depressurizing it at the same time. That is why it is the least efficient way to cool a space and why EIA’s data shows households relying on a portable unit using slightly more electricity for cooling than households with a window unit, for noticeably less comfort. A dual-hose model fixes most of that and is worth the price difference. Costed over a five-month cooling season.
Unlike resistance loads, efficiency here is genuinely shoppable — the CEER rating on the EnergyGuide label sets the input watts directly, and it is a large part of why real units span 800–1,600 W. The same refrigeration cycle also runs in reverse: the heat pump , at about $104.78 an in-season month, is what that trick looks like applied to heating.

Putting Portable air conditioner in proportion
At 17¢/kWh, a portable air conditioner next to the rest of the bill:
- Portable air conditioner at $46.51 a month is close to Hot tub at $42.08, and just under 240V garage heater at $51.00
- One hour of a portable air conditioner uses as much as 20 hours of a 60 W Wi-Fi router
- Over a year a portable air conditioner comes to $233 — about 1.6 months of a $150 monthly electricity bill
For a portable air conditioner: cooling equipment moves heat rather than making it, so it delivers several units of cooling per unit of electricity. That efficiency is why it beats resistance heating for the same effect, and long run-hours are why it still lands high on the bill. On this site’s own numbers, a portable air conditioner lands at #10 of 40 on the monthly-cost ranking, at about $46.51 for a typical month.
The formula, in full
The 1,200 W arithmetic for a portable air conditioner, step by step:
- Watts to kilowatts. 1,200 W ÷ 1,000 = 1.20 kW.
- Energy per day. 1.20 kW × 7.6 hours = 9.12 kWh.
- Cost per day. 9.12 kWh × $0.17 = $1.55.
- Cost per month. $1.55 × 30 days = $46.51.
For a portable air conditioner the two levers are run-hours (7.6 h/day here) and your rate; at 7.6 hours a day, 1,200 W adds up — which is why cooling equipment dominate the rankings.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run a portable air conditioner per hour?
About $0.204 an hour for a portable air conditioner at 17¢/kWh, the EIA 2025 annual US average (July 2026 monthly: 18.31¢), for a 1,200 W unit. The calculation is 1,200 ÷ 1,000 × 1 hour × $0.17 per kWh. At 30¢/kWh the same hour costs $0.360.
How much does a portable air conditioner add to my monthly bill?
Roughly $46.51 a month for a portable air conditioner at 7.6 hours a day, 30 days a month, 17¢/kWh. That is about $233 a year across a 5-month season. For a portable air conditioner, change the 7.6-hour default to your own use — run-time moves the total as much as the 1,200 W does.
How many watts does a portable air conditioner use?
Typically around 1,200 W, with real units ranging from about 800 to 1,600 W depending on size, model and setting. The nameplate on your own unit is the figure to trust — these are typical values for planning, not a measurement of your appliance.
Why is my actual bill higher than the a portable air conditioner figure?
$46.51 a month is the energy cost of a portable air conditioner alone; your bill adds fixed connection charges, delivery fees, taxes and every other load. Add the other appliances in the index to a portable air conditioner for the controllable part of the bill.
How we calculated this
Worked for a portable air conditioner: 1,200 W ÷ 1,000 × 7.6 h × $0.17 = $1.55 a day; × 30 days = $46.51 a month; × 5 months in use = $233 a year. 1,200 W and 7.6 h are the typical figures cited for a portable air conditioner; 17¢ is EIA’s 2025 annual US average.Sources: U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) electricity rates · DSIRE incentive records · public IRS/OBBBA guidance.
