Each column is one EPM archive edition's Table 5.6.A residential figure; the newest month typically publishes about two months after it ends. EIA occasionally revises earlier months in later editions; where this site holds a newer print (June 2025), the revised figure is used so no two pages here disagree. Retrieved 2026-09-10.
How to read it honestly
Two cautions make this chart more useful. First, the publication lag: EIA’s state-level residential rates arrive roughly two months after the calendar month, so “latest” here is never this month’s bill — it is the newest audited figure that exists. Second, seasonality: many utilities price summer and winter differently, so a month-over-month jump can be a season change rather than a trend; the year-over-year delta compares like with like, which is why both are shown. The full ranking page has this month’s cross-state picture, and if your own bill moved by more than your state’s line explains, the bill jump calculator will split the difference into weather, rate and usage.
How we calculated this
Month-over-month % = (this month − last month) ÷ last month; year-over-year uses the same month a year earlier. Every value is the residential average from the EIA Electric Power Monthly edition in which it was first published, revised to the latest edition where EIA restated it. The what-if line multiplies your kWh by the selected month’s rate.Sources: U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) electricity rates · DSIRE incentive records · public IRS/OBBBA guidance. Figures are modeled estimates, not quotes or tax advice. See our methodology.

- Why is my electric bill so high? — If your bill moved more than the rate did, this splits the jump into weather, rate and usage.
