How to read it honestly

Two cautions make this chart more useful. First, the publication lag: EIA’s state-level residential rates arrive roughly two months after the calendar month, so “latest” here is never this month’s bill — it is the newest audited figure that exists. Second, seasonality: many utilities price summer and winter differently, so a month-over-month jump can be a season change rather than a trend; the year-over-year delta compares like with like, which is why both are shown. The full ranking page has this month’s cross-state picture, and if your own bill moved by more than your state’s line explains, the bill jump calculator will split the difference into weather, rate and usage.

How we calculated this

Month-over-month % = (this month − last month) ÷ last month; year-over-year uses the same month a year earlier. Every value is the residential average from the EIA Electric Power Monthly edition in which it was first published, revised to the latest edition where EIA restated it. The what-if line multiplies your kWh by the selected month’s rate.
